The Handmaid's Tale: Why So Dark?

I just started watching The Handmaid’s Tale (not really, I started almost a year ago but stopped after 4 episodes). I like the almost sci-fi story and the chilling dystopia. There are just a few things stopping me from binging the entire show. Firstly, WHY IS EVERY SCENE SO DARK??? In almost every other indoor scene, it is impossible to see characters or hear dialogue (another problem). I find this frustrating, since the outdoor scenes look so good. Maybe this is just a problem from the time, because other shows from the same time period also have this problem, looking underexposed and muddy. Secondly, and much more importantly, I don’t quite enjoy how slow everyone talks in this show. It feels like a slog to listen to characters talk, and the main actress’ choice of voice acting almost gets on my nerves a little bit.

All in all, this is a great show (obviously), but these small issues just irk me too much to allow me to get invested in the show.
